Frequently Asked Questions about Vision Day

Answers

What is Vision Day?

A personal retreat and customized day of planning for your life.

How did Vision Day come about?

A coaching pioneer and full time executive coach since 1995, Debbie Phillips saw that her clients needed something more than hourly coaching sessions.

She suspected that clients would appreciate getting out of the bubbling pots of their daily lives into an inspiring and comforting day away, so that they could dream, plan, express their deepest desires, and establish a blueprint for the future.

Clients responded immediately, and the first Vision Day took place in Boston in 1999.  Soon after, Rob Berkley joined Debbie in leading Vision Days, not only for individuals but also for corporate teams, business partners and couples.

“I think it is ironic that in our careers we participate in countless corporate or work retreats to set the company’s vision and direction,” says Debbie. “And we rarely, if ever, hold such a retreat for our own life. Isn’t our own future direction at least as important as our company’s?”

What’s included in my Vision Day?

Each Vision Day is custom-designed for your needs. In most cases, it includes:

  • A preliminary interview to establish goals for your Vision Day
  • Transportation to and from your Martha’s Vineyard inn, hotel, airport or ferry to the Vision Day location on the island
  • A full day led by one or two executive coaches (us!)
  • A delicious lunch
  • Snacks and beverages throughout the day
  • Afterwards, a detailed Vision Day report containing your plan and reviewing other key insights and strategies from the day. This way, you won’t have to take notes and can put your full attention on the work at hand.
  • A follow-up coaching session after your Vision Day to monitor your progress and clear up any questions

What can I expect during my Vision Day?

We create an atmosphere of inspiration, clarity, fun and safety for you. Vision Day is your time to truly relax and renew while working with us.  We keep you on track and on target toward your goals.

Usually we start the day at 8 AM or 9 AM and conclude at 4 PM or 5 PM. (If sleeping in a little later is a major treat, we encourage it and will adjust the schedule to your needs.)  We’ll have a working lunch and breaks as needed during the day. Your day will contain some or all of the following:  creative thinking exercises, journaling, guided meditations, decision outlining, goal setting, strategy mapping, and good, old-fashioned discussion.

We go at your pace throughout the day, keeping you relaxed and focused until your plan jells.  Inspiration is key.  When weather permits, we might have lunch at the beach or take a walk to the nearby horse pasture.

By the end of your day, you are ready to return to your inn for more rest, relaxation and perhaps an evening meal at one of the many superb restaurants on Martha’s Vineyard.

We also can provide you with recommendations for massages, fitness activities and other healing treatments on the island.

Where are Vision Days held?

Most Vision Days take place on Martha’s Vineyard, because we believe it is one of the most beautiful, inspiring and healing spots in the world. (That’s why we live here.) We encourage you to come early and take a few extra days to soak in the peace, beauty and tranquility. The combination of Vision Day and a few days of island R&R makes a world of difference for the many clients who have taken us up on the suggestion.

We also hold group and corporate Vision Days at other locations depending on our clients’ needs. Please let us know if you would like to sponsor a Group Vision Day for your organization, clients or corporate team.

Is there a theoretical foundation for Vision Day?

The structure and process of Vision Day originated by applying the principles and techniques used in corporate strategic planning, political campaign planning, and project management to people’s lives.

Once we saw what worked most successfully for our clients, the process evolved. Currently, we draw from more than 37 coaching frameworks to create a day that supports your objectives. These involve tested methods in values clarification, belief auditing, personal gift elicitation, life-transition planning, and advanced communications skills for leadership.

Vision Day participants often remark that in addition to helping them thinking deeply about their lives and reach clarity, the exercises were fun and energizing.

What can I expect to take away from my Vision Day?

You’ll leave Vision Day with a picture of what is important to you and how to attain it. With fresh insights about what gives you satisfaction in life, you’ll experience clarity about your gifts and talents and how you might best use them.

You can look back on your day with pride and accomplishment, for all that you covered, all you achieved, and how enjoyable the process was.

Do I need special preparation?

No. We strive to make sure your Vision Day is as simple and easy as possible. The last thing you need is more complexity and stress in your life!

Once you’ve decide to set aside the time for a Vision Day, all you have to do is schedule a date and make your travel arrangements.

We take it from there and help you move along in a clear and easy step-by-step process.

With a few short “fieldwork” assignments and a conversation with your coach to establish your objectives for the day, you’re ready!

How often should I schedule a Vision Day?

In our experience and that of our clients, one Vision Day a year keeps you on track.

Those in the midst of big projects or corporate turmoil or who wish to make faster progress can benefit from coming at six- to nine-month intervals.

It is also common for one member of a partnership (business or personal) to enjoy a Vision Day and then return shortly afterwards with their partner for a joint Vision Day, which allows them to coordinate their plans and create a shared vision for the relationship.

Where will I stay when I come for my Vision Day?

There are many wonderful bed and breakfast inns on Martha’s Vineyard. We have relationships with some of the best (at all price ranges) and gladly make recommendations for the ones we feel will best suit you and the experience you seek. Let us know your preferences and we will suggest a few places to contact.

How do I get to Martha’s Vineyard?

Martha’s Vineyard is an island 80 miles south of Boston and about eight miles off the coast of Massachusetts. Year-round, it is accessible by car ferry from Woods Hole and by plane on Cape Air, a commuter airline. During the summer months, some national airlines have scheduled flights. Do you offer a payment plan for Vision Day?

We take all major credit cards and will establish terms with you, if you so desire.

What can I work on during my Vision Day?

That’s up to you. Part of the Vision Day process is for the executive coaches to refine your needs and goals with you before you arrive.

Clients have worked on a variety of issues, including:

  • Daily life/schedule/routine

  • Business

  • Personal education plan
  • Career/Job
  • Education/Personal Growth
  • Intimate Relationship
  • Family/Children
  • Friendships
  • Financial vision
  • Being of service
  • Health/Self-Care
  • Spirituality
  • Long dreamed about special projects
  • Getting a hold on that big thing that you want to do but haven’t yet fully crystallized in your mind yet.
  • Your personal legacy … and much more!

In what other ways can Vision Day benefit me?

In addition to the road map for you to follow step-by-step over the next six to 12 months, together we will identify resources and milestones for us or another coach to verify with you as you move forward during the year.

You might also complete Vision Day with plans and insights you would like to share with your other support resources, such as an accountant, financial planner, therapist, lawyer or your spouse, partner or boss.

What types of people sign up for Vision Days?

People who come to Vision Day want more for their lives, and they understand the value of investing in themselves.  All are leaders, whether of a company, a business, a team, their family or their own life.

Some are in major transitions – from divorce, illness, retirement, job or career change, death in the family – and find Vision Day helpful in reorienting themselves.

Some can’t identify that something big they would like to do, or just need a nudge to sit down and begin an important project they’ve already identified.

Vision Day participants want a clear understanding of what’s most important to them so they can focus their time and energy on what they wish to be, do and have tomorrow.

To date, Vision Day participants have included corporate presidents, small business owners, coaches, work-at-home parents, physicians, lawyers, and politicians, as well as executives in advertising, publishing, technology, entertainment, journalism, manufacturing, and more.

How is a Couple’s Vision Day different from marriage or relationship counseling?

The Couple’s Vision Day is NOT marriage or relationship counseling.

Vision Day benefits couples in a healthy, committed relationship who would like to create a joint plan and a vision for their life together.  Very often in the process they find ways to improve their relationship.  Some of the advanced communications skills we teach corporate leaders also work wonders for improving a couple’s communication.

We like to think of this work as couples coaching, where the focus is on developing and sharing strategies that help couples build on their individual strengths and the strengths of their relationship.

Is Vision Day guaranteed?

Yes.  If at any time during your Vision Day you are not satisfied, please let us know immediately. If at the end of the day, you do not feel that the day met your expectations, we will gladly refund your Vision Day fee.

Since you alone are responsible for executing your plan and validating all of the aspects of your life and plans, we are not the prime mover in your reaching your goals. Even so, we do our best to support you in your quest in any way we can.

If Vision Day sounds like it would offer support and galvanize you to reach for the life you want, please call us at (508) 696-4949 or contact us by email.
